Japan wins gold : The fourth day of the World Judo Championships in Uzbekistan at the Humo Arena did not disappoint.
An outstanding exhibition of local talent and enthusiasm was on display during the ceremonial opening ceremony.
Both IJF President Mr. Marius Vizer and Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Aripov hosted the opening ceremony for the 2022 World Judo Championships.
Attendees of various ages performed the song with the same unwavering sense of national pride.
Fourth Olympic gold for Japan
Without Judo icon Clarisse Agbegnenou in the under 63kg division, Canada’s Olympic bronze medalist Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard appeared eager to step up to the vacant throne, and her powerful foundation ultimately earned her a berth in the final.
On the opposite side of the draw, Japan’s Horikawa Megumi seemed poised to add to her country’s four gold medals. By use of spectacular Judo, such as an Osoto-gari to one side.
Horikawa, a Japanese athlete, showed obvious joy after winning the under 63 kilogram championship with a flawless Uchi-mata in the last round, establishing herself as a judoka to keep an eye on in the future.
The medals were presented by His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Aripov, Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
“Uchi-mata is one of my most effective techniques; I’m ecstatic to have used it to win the World Championship.” Exclaimed Megumi Horikawa with glee.
Tournament-deciding fight
The spectators then watched as the Georgian wonder, Tato Grigalashvili, sped his way into the final. The runner-up at last year’s World Championships was determined to win gold this time around.
He competed against Belgian Matthias Casse, his most formidable opponent since last year’s World Final. Casse’s last-ditch effort to beat Fujiwara of Japan saved him from elimination in the semifinals.
It was a rematch worthy of the original and it ended up being one of the tournament’s top matches because of it. Two world-class Judoka performing at the highest level. The crowd went wild, and in a breathtaking moment of Judo, the Georgian dug deep and threw a tremendous haymaker to score a Waza-ari and win the World Championship from Casse.
Dr. Chungwon, President of the World Taekwondo Federation, presented the winners with medals.
